The Faculty of Medicine comprises of 23 departments. It prepares specialists with higher education in Medicine, acquiring the educational and qualification degree Master – Doctor and the educational and scientific Doctor’s degree, and trains PhD students and conducts postgraduate training in a wide range of specialties. Since the establishment of the university, the number of graduates in Medicine has reached nearly 10 000 students, 1500 of them being foreign nationals. Within the academic year 2013/2014, at the Faculty of Medicine over 1300 students were trained, including 35 nationals of foreign countries.

  • One of the major goals of the education in medical programmes is the harmonization and integration of pre-clinical and clinical training. The University pays special attention and invests considerable funds in the development of simulation training methods. The simulators in the field of surgery, ultrasound, emergency medicine and anaesthesiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, dental medicine provide students with the opportunity to apply practically what they have learned. A real-time video link is available between the operating and training rooms.
  • Along with the practice in a simulation environment, the students at MU-Varna have ample opportunities to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in a real environment. MU-Varna has numerous clinical bases, located on the territory of the whole country. The main training base for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students is University Hospital “St. Marina” in Varna – the most modern medical and diagnostic structure in North-eastern Bulgaria, equipped with the latest generation of equipment.
  • Varna Medical School has the first University pharmacy within the University, providing a real training environment to the Pharmacy and Assistant-Pharmacist.
  • Dental Medicine students have the opportunity to study at the first and only University Dental Centre.
  • Plenty of extracurricular practices are being held at Medical University – Varna, such as summer schools, various modules and seminars (emergency medicine, disaster response, maritime medicine, marine accidents, maritime pathophysiology), language practice for international students in Bulgaria. The outstanding students traditionally visit CERN – the world’s largest Particle Physics Laboratory in Switzerland.
  • The University is actively involved in socially beneficial activities, conducting a variety of social, health and information campaigns, organized by students and lecturers such as blood donation, Diabetes campaigns, anti-AIDS campaigns, oral health promotion campaigns, etc.
  • The Varna Medical University offers its students a modern environment with unlimited opportunities to develop themselves. Besides the state-of-the-art laboratories and training facilities for practice, a library with electronic reading rooms and access to the world’s best information databases, the University provides its students with modern sports facilities and professional coaches in football, basketball, volleyball, tennis and boxing. The Medical University in Varna is the only one in the country offering its students sailing training programmes with its own sailing boats. Music, dance and theatre lovers are welcome to join the University rock band, the folk dance troupe or the student theatre troupe.

 

Medicine

  • The MD programme is six-year course taught in English. The program is designed for students who are strongly motivated, have a good command of both written and spoken English and interest in medical science.
  • It is ten semesters and one-year of state clinical internships – 310 calendar days. Except for the fact that instructions, labs, lectures and examinations are conducted in English, the curriculum of the six-year medical studies in English is completely identical with the coursework pursued by Bulgarian medical students. Learning Bulgarian language is also compulsory during the first three years of the program.  Students are required to learn Bulgarian in order to be able to communicate with the patients and in order to avoid the misunderstanding of the patients from the third year onwards.
  • The first two years of the MD programme includes an overview of fundamental or basic science courses. The first year is devoted to general understanding of biological, chemical and physical sciences applicable to the practice of medicine. Starting with the second year, the focus progressively narrows down, channelling the studies towards those biomedical sciences that are most relevant for a practicing physician.
  • The theoretical component of the the course is made up of core modules, optional and facultative disciplines, in form of lectures, seminars, practical exercise and self-training.
  • The practical training of the course is conducted by practical studies during the semester training, training practices and pre-graduation internship.
  • The theoretical and practical training of the programme is compliance with the ECTS system.
  • The clinical years are what all medical students anticipate, a time when lectures and laboratories translate into patient care. The clinical studies examine the application of the biomedical sciences mastered during the first two years of the MD programme. The teaching from the third year onwards takes place exclusively in clinical settings of the modern facilities of the University teaching hospitals and involves work with patients admitted for treatment.
  • The last year of the medical studies has exclusively practical rotation. During the last year, students work under the direct guidance of the assistants and instructors to gain clinical practice.
  • Final assessment of knowledge acquired by the students after accomplishing their full course of studies is given by the State Examination Board Committees at comprehensive theoretical and practical state examinations. ​
  • After the successful completion of the 6-years course of academic studies of the Programme of medicine, students are awarded a Diploma of completed higher medical education. Graduates will be awarded Master’s degree along with the professional qualification “physician”- Doctor of Medicine. A European supplement to the medical Diploma issued in English language is also provided to the medical graduates upon graduation. The Master-physician is an accomplished specialist who enjoys the necessary knowledge, skills and qualities for the realization of the contents, goals and assignments of the general medical practice.
  • The possession of that degree enables the holder to practice medicine in EU countries as well as in many other countries worldwide.
Dentistry
  • The Dental Medicine programme is a 6 year full time course which is taught in English. the course of study lasts five years (ten semesters), the pre-graduation practice after the 10th semester (135 working days or 1080 hours) and two training practices with 30 calendar days duration (each training covers 150 hours) after the sixth and the eighth semester.
  • During the first two years, students are trained in medical and biological subjects (first stage). Learning Bulgarian language is compulsory during the first three years of the program. Students are required to learn Bulgarian in order to be able to communicate with patients and in order to avoid the misunderstanding of the patients from the third year onwards.
  • Clinical and medical training begins from second to tenth semester which includes specialized training in general medical and clinical dental disciplines (second stage).
  • The theoretical training includes core, optional and facultative module, in the form of lectures, seminars, practical exercise (clinical work with dental patients) and self-training. The practical training is conducted in the form of practical studies during the semester training, training practices and pre-graduation practice. The practical instruction of students includes specific volume of practical therapeutic activity.
  • Under the tutelage of highly trained and productive scientists, the student acquires a solid foundation in biomedical sciences. This knowledge forms the basis for understanding the wide variety of diseases that a dentist must diagnose and treat. It also forms the foundation for the effective practice of preventive dentistry.
  • The pre-graduation internship/practice (third stage) is conducted in cycles in prosthetic dentistry, conservative dental treatment, periodontology and diseases of the oral mucosa; oral and maxillo-facial surgery, paediatric Dental Medicine, orthodontics. Every cycle (stage) ends with a state examination.
  • Upon graduation, students obtain a DMD Master’s degree in Dental Medicine. The possession of this degree enables the holder to practice dental medicine in EU countries, as well as in many other countries worldwide. A European supplement to the Diploma of completed higher education, issued in English language is also provided to graduates of the programme upon graduation.
  • Faculty of Dental Medicine benefits from a large pool of patients who seek dental treatment at its modern clinics and the only one in Bulgaria withing the University medical and dental centre, equipped with cutting-edge technologies.​
  • Since its foundation g in 2006, the Faculty of Dental Medicine at Medical University of Varna has been committed to excellence in education, patient care, research, and community service.
  • Foreign citizens are admitted to Medical University of Varna as per the Law of Higher Education and Ordinance of the State Requirements of the Republic of Bulgaria for Admission of Bulgarian and Foreign Students.
  • The Medical University of Varna offers a preparatory course in English language for those applicants interested in the Programmes of Medicine, Dental medicine and Pharmacy-English language education, who are not proficient in English.
  • Citizens of countries, which are not members of the EU and EEA, are admitted after approval of submitted application documents (which must meet the admission requirements) by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and after sitting the Entry test/s required for the relevant programme of interest, and being successfully ranked for an admission place.
  • Applicants for the programmes taught in English  – Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy are required to sit the Biology and Chemistry Entry tests.
  • Have completed secondary education (hold a Diploma or secondary school leaving certificate) which enables them to continue their studies in higher institutions and universities in the country in which the secondary education has been completed
  • Have studied and completed Biology and Chemistry subjects in the secondary school – for those applicants who are interested in all undergraduate Programmes offered at MU-Varna (including the Programmes of Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy). An average mark in Biology and Chemistry subjects from the Diploma of secondary education to be no less than 65% of the possible maximum of the grading system in the respective country.
  • Biology and Chemistry high school courses marked in the Diploma as optional will not be accepted.
  • UK prospect students are required to submit their GCSE and GCE A-level certificates, issued by one of the official examination boards in the UK. When the student applies before they have received their final GCE A-level, the official Statement of results/Result slip (issued by the college or the examination board) shall be submitted upon applying and additionally the actual certificate.
  • For applicants following the British curriculum, it is required to have 3 A-level subjects / GCE A-levels, two of them should be Biology and Chemistry. Where A-levels have a separately graded practical component, this is required and must be passed. BTEC and Foundation programmes, IGCSE, O-Levels or AS-Levels as an entrance qualification are not accepted.
  • Medical University-Varna welcomes applications from applicants with strong academic performance (grades A-C) in the two mandatory high school subjects – Biology and Chemistry.
  • Varna is located in Southeast Europe, a modern and dynamic city . Its economy is mainly based on shipbuilding, its freight port, trade, as well as on the tourism sector.
  • As a cosmopolitan area, Varna attracts foreigners in large numbers. Whether you are moving there alone or with your family, you will enjoy an incredible view of the Black Sea along with all necessary facilities to bring you a unique experience.
  • Bus transportation is well-developed, buses travel to most parts of the city, even Vinitsa, which is significantly separated from the central parts of Varna. You can hop on a bus from the early morning hours until 11 pm or even midnight, and the bus ticket only costs 1 lv ($0.60/€0.51). In addition, there are numerous taxi companies that can provide instant transportation to any desired destination. You can use Varna’s airport to travel to nearby countries.

  • Traveling inside the country is relatively easy because everything is within distance, trip Sofia-Varna is one of the longer distances to travel is only 450 km, and there are also flights that connect both cities in less than an hour. But if you prefer the beautiful landscape and have enough time, you can take the slow train service, you can pass from the mountains to the Black Sea coastline in a couple hours and in between, you will find beautiful valleys.
